FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION
External parasites cause obvious discomfort in our furry friends.
Even in mild cases, they make pets itchy. And unfortunately, even those minor cases tend to quickly develop into serious infestations when they are not properly treated.
Ticks are most commonly associated with Lyme Disease, but that certainly isn’t the only tickborne disease to be worried about. Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and several other serious illnesses and infections are spread by ticks. Keep in mind, too, that many of these illnesses can affect humans. If your pet is bringing ticks into your home, your entire family is at risk.
Fleas make pets itchy, and the problem is even worse among dogs and cats who are allergic to flea saliva. Excessive scratching and chewing of the skin can lead to discomfort, pain, hair loss, and even secondary skin infections. In cases of severe infestations, life-threatening anemia is even possible. It’s also important to note that fleas can carry other parasites. Flea larvae can ingest tapeworm eggs and carry them until adulthood. When your dog or cat swallows an infected flea while chewing or licking an itchy spot, they become infected with a tapeworm. Tapeworms are nasty internal parasites that damage the small intestine and rob your pet of vital nutrition, potentially leading to malnutrition and/or weight loss.
Prevention is the best way to protect your pet from fleas and ticks. While there are countless products on the market, the best are those that you purchase from your veterinarian. Vet-quality flea and tick products have undergone extensive testing to ensure their safety and effectiveness, and they are the best choice when it comes to caring for your beloved pet.
